Sagelands Riesling

Vintage: 2006

Purchased: Jun 9th 2007

Price: $14.00

Purchase Location: Sagelands Vineyards - (http://www.sagelandsvineyard.com/)

Categories: Riesling - Washington - White

Tasting Notes:

As I drink more and more riesling from around the world I find my palate becoming more and more discriminating. What I once drank and quite liked, I know see as slightly flawed. This isn't a bad wine. I quite liked it the first time I had it. It's pleasantly off dry. This time however, I just couldn't coax out enough acidity to make me happy. It could be that the bottle was just too old, the 2007's should be around now. But rather than take a chance, I'll focus my riesling dollars elsewhere.

Klein aux Vieux Remparts Riesling Burgeben

Vintage: 1996

Purchased: Jul 5th 2007

Price: $18.93

Number on Hand: 1

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Categories: Alsace - France - Riesling - White

Tasting Notes:

This is an outstanding wine at the price I paid. Decade old riesling from a single vineyard for under $20? Are you kidding me?

This wine was a fairly deep golden. Not the light straw that you get from a young riesling. The nose was powerful and outstanding. Tons of petroleum, citrus, flowers, and a touch of honey. In the mouth this was a steely mineral laced wine. The fruit was muted at first but the acid and minerals were off the charts, but not in an out of balanced way. As it opened up more, the fruit flavors (apple and stone fruit) became slightly more prevalent. There was also an interesting spicy note on the finish.

I'm glad I have another bottle of this. I'd be very interested to try it again with a bit of a decant.

Schloss Schonborn Hochheimer Domdechaney Riesling Spatlese

Vintage: 1994

Purchased: Apr 26th 2007

Price: $23.73

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Categories: Germany - Riesling - White

Tasting Notes:

Of the all the aged riesling that Garagiste sold from this producer, so far this is my favorite. In the glass it's a deep dark golden color. The nose is very expressive of flowers, fruit, honey, and just a touch of kerosene. Once in the mouth it explodes in to complex flavors that range from creamy to tart with a minerally and earthy component. There is just a little diesel fuel taste but plenty of apples, green grapes, and clover honey. The finish is super long.

I think the wine might have been even better on the second day. I wish I had about 20 more bottles of this.

Domaines Schlumberger Grand Cru Saering Riesling

Vintage: 2004

Purchased: Dec 21st 2007

Price: $19.99

Purchase Location: Esquin - (http://www.esquin.com/)

Categories: Alsace - France - Riesling - White

Tasting Notes:

This is my first grand cru wine from Alsace, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I served it with a Vietnamese style braised pork shoulder salad.

In the glass it was a pale yellow, with just a hint of green in the color. The nose was a mixture of flowers, lemon peel, and green apple. On the first sip, I was surprised by the body. It was thicker than most riesling, however there was no perceptible sugar. The acid was nice, but it wasn't as racy as riesling can sometimes get. The fruit was muted, mostly lemon and green apple, but with a ton of minerals. I didn't detect and petrol notes that I sometimes get from riesling on the finish, but it was a long finish with an almost bitter grapefruit flavor mixed with a nutmegy spice and more minerals.

Schloss Schonborn Hochheimer Holle Riesling Spatlese

Vintage: 1994

Purchased: Sep 5th 2007

Price: $16.99

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Categories: Germany - Riesling - White

Tasting Notes:

This is the second aged riesling from this producer that I've recently had. This was from the same vintage and vineyard as the last, so I was quite curious to see how it would stack up.

In the glass it had the same beautiful golden color, but seemed a bit thicker. The nose of the wine was similar: citrus zests, gasoline, and orange blossom. On the palate though, it was a different beast. Whereas the kabinett was filled with racy acidity and lemon flavors; this wine was rooted in apple, pear and pineapple tastes. The acidity was still there, but the honey component was much stronger. The finish was even longer with tons of floral flavors and a hint of gasoline that lingered.

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Tasting Notes:

This is a yummy German Riesling. It's a beautiful deep golden in the glass, the only indication of its age. Its nose was quite closed and took a while of being open to really stand out. The nose had scents of lemon zest, orange blossom, and hints of gasoline. In the mouth the acidity was amazing and mouth watering with flavors of Meyer Lemons and honey. The finish was long with lots of mineral and a bit of gasoline flavor.

Vin du Lac Les Amis

Vintage: 2004

Purchased: Jul 12th 2007

Price: $11.00

Purchase Location: Maple Leaf Wine Cellar - (http://www.mapleleafcellar.com/)

Categories: Gewurztraminer - Riesling - Washington - White

Tasting Notes:

We were eating a choucroute garni for dinner and wanted an Alsatian style wine, without opening one of my better Alsatians. This wine is 75% riesling, but also contains muscat and gewurztraminer making it similar to an Alsatian edelzwicker.

This wine is a very pale golden in the glass. Not nearly as dark and thick as I've seen from Alsace. The nose was a combination of white peach and green apple with a strong rose petal floral smell. This wine was much more floral than most and I assume it was the muscat and gewurz which caused this. In the mouth, the fruity white peach with just a touch of sweetness is the first thing you notice. There is a touch of acid in the form of a green apple flavor, but not enough to really be considered crisp. The wine would seem flabby, but the finish contains both a strong floral component and a bitter almond taste that seem to counterbalance the earlier sweetness.

This is not a great wine, but it's pretty good. It's also very interesting and worth a try.

Steppe Cellars Dry Riesling

Vintage: 2006

Purchased: Jun 10th 2007

Price: $14.40

Number on Hand: 1

Purchase Location: Steppe Cellars - (http://www.steppecellars.com/)

Categories: Riesling - Washington - White

Tasting Notes:

This was one of our favorite wines from our trip to Rattlesnake Hills, and thankfully time in the cellar didn't hurt it at all!

In the glass it was a pale golden. It has great aromas of honey, peach and apricot. Very fruity and pleasant on the nose. On the first sip it seems very rich with flavors of ripe apple and peach. What sets apart this wine from much of what is produced in this state is the acidity. It's nice and crisp and refreshing and leads to a very long finish. This is very much in the style of what I've had from Alsace. It's not quite German as the alcohol is a bit higher and the sweetness lower, but it is very good indeed.
