Hollywood Hill Vineyards Pinot Noir Rose

Vintage: 2007

Purchased: Apr 5th 2008

Price: $20.00

Purchase Location: Hollywood Hill Vineyards - (http://www.hollywoodhillvineyards.com/)

Categories: Pinot Noir - Rose - Washington

Tasting Notes:

This is a perfect rose for me. The color in the glass is a little odd, as it's almost a salmon color of orange. But the nose is beautiful with a strong strawberry and rhubarb scent. In the mouth it's light and alive with flavor. Strawberry dominates upfront, but there is a touch of orange zest and a great acidity which makes the wine seem dry, even though there is a touch of residual sugar.

Steppe Cellars Syrah Rose

Vintage: 2007

Purchased: May 31st 2008

Price: $16.00

Purchase Location: Steppe Cellars - (http://www.steppecellars.com/)

Categories: Rose - Syrah/Shiraz - Washington

Tasting Notes:

This was wine number one for the Mia and Ryan farewell dinner I prepared. It was pared with playful takes on salad nicose and pasta primavera.

This is a nice fruit forward wine with a good dark pink (with hints of salmon) color. The nose is very lively with fresh red berries and violets.

The wine is all bright red fruit on the palate, with a nice acid backbone and a slight residual sweetness on the finish that balances the floral characteristics nicely.

It may be a little expensive for a rose, but a single vineyard wine made with this much care is a good thing to support.

This is a pretty great rose wine. The color in the glass is almost salmon. The nose is a pleasant mixture of strawberry, watermelon, and a touch of mint. In the mouth the fruitiness is great with a good acid backbone and a bitter almond finish that makes things interesting.

Hyatt Vineyards Black Muscat

Vintage: 2006

Purchased: Jun 9th 2007

Price: $6.99

Purchase Location: Hyatt Vineyards - (http://www.hyattvineyards.com/)

Categories: Rose - Washington

Tasting Notes:

Kathrine made a chicken curry, and I thought this would be a good drink to have. In the glass, the wine is a rusty cherry color. Darker than usual for a rose. The nose was very strong and distinct. Strawberry and rose petal dominated. The rose strongly reminded me of gewurztraminer. On the palate, the flavors were very fruit forward with strawberry, cherry, and plums dominating. There was a little bit of acid that carried to the finish. The finish was were things got interesting. It was quite spicy. The dominating spice was cinnamon. There was also a bitterness on the finish.

This was an interesting off dry rose, that makes a good food wine. At this price, it's hard not to try it.

Prieure De Montezargues Tavel Rose

Vintage: 2005

Purchased: Mar 24th 2007

Price: $15.99

Purchase Location: Metropolitan Market - (http://www.metropolitan-market.com/)

Categories: France - Rhone Valley - Rose

Tasting Notes:

It's been hot in Seattle lately, so for our Friday night dinner we settled on having a salad nicoise. What wine to go with a Southern French dish than a Southern Rhone rose?

This wine had a very powerful nose of ripe red berries and violets. In the glass it was a much darker pink color than you usually see from a rose. On first taste the fruitiness of the berries exploded into my mouth. It was so fruity it almost seemed sweet and was a good foil to the floral components I also got. It finished dry, with a bit of pepper flavor in the back of the throat.

Syncline Rose

Vintage: 2006

Purchased: May 30th 2007

Price: $9.99

Purchase Location: Metropolitan Market - (http://www.metropolitan-market.com/)

Categories: Rose - Syrah/Shiraz - Washington

Tasting Notes:

Kathrine opened this up midweek to drink while I was out playing poker, she didn't care for it that much so I helped her polish it off.

It's a good pink color in the glass with a nose of strawberries and watermelon. The aroma is quite mouthwatering. In the mouth, you get the same fruit flavors; but there is an added floral complexity. I tasted it as lavender, but the tasting notes suggest rose water or violets. I didn't care for this aspect of the wine. Then the alcohol hits you. I thought that was what threw it all out of balance.

Facelli Rosato

Vintage: NV

Purchased: Feb 17th 2007

Price: $10.99

Purchase Location: Facelli Winery - (http://www.facelliwinery.com/)

Categories: Rose - Washington

Tasting Notes:

This was the rose I served at the BBQ. This was a great choice, and one of the best dry rose wines I've had. I remembered liking it when we went to the winery, but that was a while ago and after a long day of drinking wine.

It's a beautiful pink color in the glass with strawberries and raspberries dominating the nose. As I sniffed more, I could also detect a hint of what smelled like dill. It was far in the background and not unpleasant at all. On the first taste, you really get the fruit, but it eases a way to a nice combination of floral/herbal flavors with a hint of black pepper on the finish. Even though it has over 14% alcohol, it never tasted hot. Very well balanced.

Silver Lake Roza Rose

Vintage: 2005

Purchased: Feb 17th 2007

Price: $9.99

Purchase Location: Silver Lake Winery - (http://www.silverlakewinery.com/)

Categories: Rose - Washington

Tasting Notes:

Opened this up for a midweek dinner of steak salad. We had bought this on our trip to the Silver Lake Winery. I remember that Kathrine was a big fan of it.

In the glass it's very bright pink. Definitely very attractive in the glass. The nose was full of ripe fruit, mostly strawberry and watermelon. On the palate, the taste followed the nose exactly. The same watermelon and strawberry tastes were there. It was also sweeter than I had imagined it would be, almost cloyingly so. The finish was short, and had a bitterness to it that I did not care for.

This was a step up from white zin, but there are much better roses out there.

Segura Viudas Brut Rose

Vintage: NV

Purchased: Mar 24th 2007

Price: $6.99

Purchase Location: The Spanish Table - (http://spanishtable.com/)

Categories: Rose - Spain - Sparkling

Tasting Notes:

We were invited to a Cinco De Mayo party for some chipotle ribs. I decided to break out the Spanish wine for the occasion.

We had this with appetizers before dinner. It was very impressive pink in the glass with a very fine bead. It had a muted nose of red fruit and yeast. The texture in the mouth of very good and thick. The initial taste was of strawberry with the fresh baked bread taking over on the end. Not a lot of acid, and no sugar to speak of. This was not a great sparkler, but for the price it is hard to complain.
