Barth Rene Gewurztraminer

Vintage: 2005

Purchased: Sep 28th 2008

Price: $16.99

Purchase Location: Metropolitan Market - (http://www.metropolitan-market.com/)

Categories: Alsace - France - Gewurztraminer - White

Tasting Notes:

Choucroute Garni and gewurztraminer is a match made in heaven. This is a great gewurz. It's a deep dark golden color that looks thick and mead like in the glass. The nose is powerful with honey, lychee, quince, and pear mingling with rose petal and cookie spices. In the mouth this is a thick and heavy wine. It is sweet, but with enough acidity to handle it. I could drink this wine everyday.

Steppe Cellars Gewurztraminer

Vintage: 2006

Purchased: May 3rd 2008

Price: $16.00

Purchase Location: Steppe Cellars - (http://www.steppecellars.com/)

Categories: Gewurztraminer - Washington - White

Tasting Notes:

This is my favorite domestic gewurztraminer. Which is saying quite a bit, because gewurz is probably my favorite white wine. This wine is off dry and opulent with the lychee and rose petal perfume just punching you in the face. But what makes this wine great is the acidity that it retains. Gewurz can get very flabby and just fall completely flat. This keeps a great acidity that brightens things up and just makes you smack your lips.

St. Christopher Gewurztraminer

Vintage: 2006

Purchased: Oct 28th 2007

Price: $11.00

Purchase Location: Maple Leaf Wine Cellar - (http://www.mapleleafcellar.com/)

Categories: Germany - Gewurztraminer - White

Tasting Notes:

This is another example of why I generally don't care much for German Gewurztraminer. When done right gewurz is one of my favorite wines, but to me even slight flaws are readily apparent in the wine.

This had the right color and nose. But in the mouth is where it started to fall apart. It was fairly thick and oily, and had the lychee and rose petal flavors. However, the sweetness was a little to cloying with not enough acid to counter the sugar. The spiciness was there on the end, but remained on the finish as a slightly bitter note. Not a bad wine, but not something I'd care to drink again.

Walla Walla Village Winery

Vintage: 2004

Purchased: Apr 13th 2008

Price: $8.00

Purchase Location: Seattle Wine Outlet - (http://seattlewineoutlet.com/)

Categories: Gewurztraminer - Washington - White

Tasting Notes:

I've been on a bit of a Vietnamese food kick, so I've been going through the riesling and gewurztraminer like it's going out of style. I got this wine at the Seattle Wine Outlet garage sale. It was very cheap, and since it was from the Celio Vineyard, I decided to gamble on it. I've been told that the Celio Vineyard makes some of the best gewurz in the state.

Things were promising from the start. The fresh fruit flavors and floral notes were apparent on the nose and the color was the correct crisp straw yellow. In the mouth the weight was right, with a nice stone fruit backbone to complement the lychee and rose petal. There was sugar, but it wasn't cloying. The acid wasn't super high, but neither was the sugar; so it was still in balance. The finish was quite long with a spicy nutmeg quality. Unfortunately the finish was also slightly bitter which I did not care for. At $8 this is a good wine, and I'm curious to try more from the vineyard.

Domaine Ehrhart Rosenberg Gewurztraminer

Vintage: 2004

Purchased: Jun 8th 2007

Price: $10.00

Purchase Location: Seattle Wine Outlet - (http://seattlewineoutlet.com/)

Categories: Alsace - France - Gewurztraminer - White

Tasting Notes:

This is the second bottle of this that I've had. I really wish I had bought more at this price. It still has the classic roses and lychee nose. With tastes of peaches, spice and a hint of grapefruit. Where it beats most domestic gewurz is the texture. It's thick and almost oily. It just feels great in the mouth.

Andrew Rich Vinter Gewurztraminer

Vintage: 2006

Purchased: Feb 2nd 2008

Price: $23.95

Purchase Location: Esquin - (http://www.esquin.com/)

Categories: Dessert - Gewurztraminer - Oregon - Washington - White

Tasting Notes:

We first tasted this wine at a Christmas dinner at Union. I was impressed that its sweetness was well balanced by the good acidity. This is an "ice wine", but one where the grapes are artificially frozen. But at this price, it's a very good deal.

It's a thick wine with a deep golden color. The nose is classic gewurz, though the floral component and lychee are joined with white peach and honey. In the mouth, the flavors are apricot and honey. It is sweet, but not cloying so. The acid kicks in and almost feels effervescent on the tongue. This is a dessert wine I could actually just sip on.

Vin du Lac Les Amis

Vintage: 2004

Purchased: Jul 12th 2007

Price: $11.00

Purchase Location: Maple Leaf Wine Cellar - (http://www.mapleleafcellar.com/)

Categories: Gewurztraminer - Riesling - Washington - White

Tasting Notes:

We were eating a choucroute garni for dinner and wanted an Alsatian style wine, without opening one of my better Alsatians. This wine is 75% riesling, but also contains muscat and gewurztraminer making it similar to an Alsatian edelzwicker.

This wine is a very pale golden in the glass. Not nearly as dark and thick as I've seen from Alsace. The nose was a combination of white peach and green apple with a strong rose petal floral smell. This wine was much more floral than most and I assume it was the muscat and gewurz which caused this. In the mouth, the fruity white peach with just a touch of sweetness is the first thing you notice. There is a touch of acid in the form of a green apple flavor, but not enough to really be considered crisp. The wine would seem flabby, but the finish contains both a strong floral component and a bitter almond taste that seem to counterbalance the earlier sweetness.

This is not a great wine, but it's pretty good. It's also very interesting and worth a try.

Erath Gewurztraminer

Vintage: 2006

Purchased: Jul 21st 2007

Price: $15.00

Purchase Location: Erath Vineyards - (http://www.erath.com/)

Categories: Gewurztraminer - Oregon - White

Tasting Notes:

I was serving an interesting caramelized carrot risotto with pork chops and wanted to drink a white rather than a red. I picked this on a whim.

The wine was a pale yellow in the glass, looking rather thin. The aroma was of lychee and rose petal with just a touch of anise. Not as heady as Alsatian gewurz, but fairly pleasing.

In the mouth it was much more full bodied than I expected. The fruit flavors other than lychee were absent, but there was a great spiciness and a hint of pine/douglas fir that I've never had before.

Kathrine found it to be a little odd. I think the combination of barrel fermentation and aging on the lees reminded her to much of bad chardonnay.

Bott Freres Reserve Personnelle Gewurztraminer

Vintage: 2000

Purchased: Apr 7th 2007

Price: $16.99

Purchase Location: Vineyard Wine Shop

Categories: Alsace - France - Gewurztraminer - White

Tasting Notes:

I've been waiting to try this for a long time, and thought it would go pretty well with some spicy corn fritters.

The first surprise was the color. It was a dark deep golden color. You could tell just by looking at it that it was old. The nose was intoxicating. Lychee, violets, and honey were the most prominent smells; but it was very complex. On the first taste, I was taken back by how thick it was. This was a very thick and opulent wine. The lychee flavor came first with a bit of honey notes, before the floral component took over. On the finish I could taste orange peel, clove, and allspice. I wish I had more of this, because at this price, this was a great gewurz!
