Straccali Chianti

Vintage: 2004

Purchased: Mar 17th 2007

Price: $8.99

Purchase Location: Esquin - (http://www.esquin.com/)

Categories: Chianti - Italy - Red

Tasting Notes:

We were eating a frozen pizza, so why not a Chianti? Of course, a frozen pizza doesn't deserve anything expensive, so I picked this.

It's a very dark purple with an oaky nose. It also has an earthy truffle component and a hint of tobacco. Hardly any fruit on the nose. The wine is medium bodied on the palate with a sour cherry/cranberry taste and tons of acid. The tannins are mild and soft.

It's not terribly complex. But it's not a bad food wine. And at this price I don't feel ripped off.

Gabbiano Chianti Classico

Vintage: 2004

Purchased: Jan 2nd 2007

Price: $11.99

Purchase Location: Metropolitan Market - (http://www.metropolitan-market.com/)

Categories: Chianti - Italy - Red

Tasting Notes:

On a Friday night Kathrine and I decided to order the Salumi Spicy Pepperoni Pizza from Pagliaccis. Of course that called for opening a bottle of chianti.

The wine was a dark red color, more of a black/violet than anything. Think dried prunes for the color. It didn't really have what I would call a fruity aroma at all. The bouquet was much more floral with the aroma of tobacco. There was a faint smell of blackberries, but it was subtle and in the background.

Once you taste it you get spice and acid, although just enough fruit and tannins to stay in balance. We recently had a cheaper, older chianti at a restaurant and what little fruit it had ever had was gone, leaving too much acidity. This wine didn't show those kind of characteristics. It went great with the pizza. It might have even been better the next day when we polished off the bottle with some cheese.
