Domaine Claude Nouveau Hautes Cotes du Beaune Vielles Vignes

Vintage: 2005

Purchased: Apr 13th 2007

Price: $16.99

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Categories: Burgundy - France - Pinot Noir - Red

Tasting Notes:

This might be the first purchase from Gargiste that I just didn't like. Or it could be that I just opened it at the wrong time. On opening it the nose was super muted. Over a few hours it opened up slightly, revealing sour cherry and cedar notes. But the fruit and other flavors were just done in by the high acidity. Not a very enjoyable bottle.

Domaine Thevenot Le Brun Hautes Cotes de Nuits "Clos du Vignon"

Vintage: 2005

Purchased: May 30th 2007

Price: $18.73

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Categories: Burgundy - France - Pinot Noir - Red

Tasting Notes:

Like the previous Burgundy I tasted, this one was all out of wack with a repressed nose. I double decanted it, and it improved somewhat; but it still wasn't enjoyable. After about four days, I decided to revisit and it was about 100 times better. You could now smell the sour cherry, earth, and minerals in it. The acidity was muted and the tannins much improved. It still tasted a little out of whack, but it was very interesting. I think I opened both of these bottles of wine at a bad time.

La Chablisienne "Fourchaume Les Vaulorent" 1er Cru

Vintage: 2001

Purchased: Aug 1st 2007

Price: $18.99

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Categories: Burgundy - Chardonnay - France - White

Tasting Notes:

Kathrine made a risotto, and I thought the crisp acidity of a Chablis would be able to cut through the creaminess of the dish. This wine was a very golden color in the glass. The nose was not fruity at all and very much different from your run of the mill chardonnay. There was pear and apple on the nose, and a touch of lemon zest; but the main component was a wet rockiness. In the mouth the acids were vibrant and worked great with the food. The apple and lemon were still there, and the minerality shone through well. If there is a flaw with this wine it would be that the acid and muted fruit seemed to be slightly out of balance when drinking the wine without food.

Patriarche Nuits-Saint-Georges

Vintage: 2003

Purchased: Apr 13th 2008

Price: $18.00

Purchase Location: Seattle Wine Outlet - (http://seattlewineoutlet.com/)

Categories: Burgundy - France - Pinot Noir - Red

Tasting Notes:

After drinking a Grand Cur Burgundy and a very good Oregon Pinot Noir, I was quite excited to try this wine. Unfortunately, this was not as good as I was hoping. The wine was much darker than your average pinot. I've seen lighter colored Bordeaux. The nose started out fairly fruity, but the aromas were more black currant and plum, rather than the brighter red fruits. In the mouth there was a plummy note and good acidity, but fairly gripping tannins, and a eucalyptus note on the finish that was not so pleasant and very unexpected.

As the wine evolved in the glass, it didn't seem to get much better. By the end, the fruitiness was gone with just the acid and tannins remaining. I can't recommend this wine at all.

Domaine Rapet Pere et Fils Corton Pougets Grand Cru

Vintage: 2003

Purchased: Feb 14th 2008

Price: $0.00

Purchase Location: La Cantina Wine Merchant

Categories: Burgundy - France - Pinot Noir - Red

Tasting Notes:

Best wine I've ever had. That should be all I need to say about this one. But, I will say more. Kathrine and I took this to Lark to celebrate my birthday. When it was first opened up I was astounded by the power of the nose. At first, red cherry was all that I got; but slowly I was smelling pine needles and a hint of cedar. In the mouth, it exploded with flavor. Cherry and raspberry with a great acid backbone in the mid palate balanced by a perfect velvety mouth feel. The best part may have been the finish though. It just kept going and going. The fruit in the finish moved more towards a boysenberry and huckleberry flavor, slightly more black than red. And there was a great nutmeg like spice component that just coated your mouth and refused to go away.

Domaine Thevenot Le Brun Hautes Cotes de Nuits "Les Renardes"

Vintage: 2005

Purchased: May 21st 2007

Price: $18.79

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Categories: Burgundy - France - Pinot Noir - Red

Tasting Notes:

I probably drank this wine before its time. It was dark in the glass for a Burgundy. Closer to purple in color and not very translucent. The nose was fairly muted but expanded the longer it was open and by the second day was quite fruity with just a hint of earth. It was heavier and much more textured on the palate than I expected. The tannins just a little out of balance and covering up some of the flavors. Again on the second day it was better, and I imagine with time this could be excellent.

Tasting Notes:

This is simply one of the best Burgundies I've ever had. It's a deep red color but still translucent. The nose is intoxicating with red fruit, cinnamon, and earth. The wine is silky smooth in the mouth with a great acid backbone. I'm totally in love and wish I had more.

Patriarche Puligny-Montrachet

Vintage: 2004

Purchased: Apr 13th 2008

Price: $18.00

Purchase Location: Seattle Wine Outlet - (http://seattlewineoutlet.com/)

Categories: Burgundy - Chardonnay - France - White

Tasting Notes:

I would suggest that everyone who says that hate chardonnay to drink a wine like this. This has none of the tropical fruit, vanilla, and butter that so often mars domestic bottles. But it is still easily recognizable as a chardonnay and not completely sharp and acidic.

It's a deep golden color with a quite thick look to it. The nose is very pronounced, a mixture of fresh cut apples and pears. In the mouth the texture is divine with the fruit flavors mingling with a green apple acidic bite and tons of minerals. I simply devoured this bottle because it was so delicious.

Giraudon Bourgogne Rouge Chitry

Vintage: 2005

Purchased: Aug 1st 2007

Price: $16.83

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Categories: Burgundy - France - Pinot Noir - Red

Tasting Notes:

Chitry is in the far north of Burgundy, and you don't see much red wine from there make it here. After tasting this, I find it a shame. The wine is a very pale transparent ruby, with slight brick red around the edges. It's darker than a rose, but very light for a red wine. The nose is raspberry, violet, and a touch of tea. In the mouth it is silky smooth, and very light. The fresh fruit flavor is there, but more muted than on the nose. Again, it is raspberry with just a touch of cherry. There is a slight bitterness that seemed to soften on the second night. The finish is very long with a white pepper component that I love.

Jean-Claude Boisset Bourgogne

Vintage: 2005

Purchased: Apr 16th 2007

Price: $14.87

Purchase Location: Garagiste - (http://www.garagistewine.com/)

Categories: Burgundy - France - Pinot Noir - Red

Tasting Notes:

We were eating roast chicken, and this seemed like a great roast chicken wine. I also thought the truffle butter would pair well with the wine.

In the glass, the wine was a dark red, with deep purple around the edges. Not translucent like some pinot is. The nose was very open with plenty of ripe red fruit, a touch of cedar, and a hint of earthy truffle. On the palate the bright red cherry flavors were the first to come out. This was backed up by a silky smooth, yet subtle tannin. The wine was not thin by any means, but not nearly as full bodied as the color suggested. The fruit flavors merged and were followed by the cedar and earth notes, with a finish that was fairly spicy.

This is a very good pinot noir, and a bargain from Burgundy. I'm curious to see what else there is from this producer.
